  1. This and other measures like it will largely ineffective. Much better to spend the money on on a TV campaign – shaming butt droppers as anti-social losers and funding more council inspectors to hand out fines.

    - Karleen, SA
  31. JUST QUIT…… I DID….. YOU CAN TOO…..

    - Adam, VIC
  32. I am a smoker and i agree depose of butts correctly, but aernt you the kind of groups that want a ban on performance cars, lower speed limits, G movies till 1am in the morning, and ban on public smoking while we are at it while dont we make the drinking age 25 and make everyone cycle to work

    - Clinton, WA
  33. i work in Melbourne and walking to and from the train station each day, I am amazed at the number of butts lying outside building, why can not companys be responsible for the cost and ongoing cost of a cig butt pole, the number of cig butts outside Southern Cross station is a disgrace but don’t blame people as there is no where to butt out, 600 Collins st is another one again there is nothing there for cig butt to be disposed.
As an incentive the cost and ongoing cost of the cig butt pole could be a deduction on city rates
Unless WE (everyone) do something, don’t start complaining about people dropping cig butt on the street where there is no alternative to put them

    - david, VIC
  34. I’m sorry to inform you but there is NO EXCUSE for littering especially when it comes to ciggarette butts. Just ask the marine life that chokes on your filthy butts. Get a personal ashtray and carry it with you. Easy.

Clearly people do not repond to posters, advertisements etc, what they will perhaps reposnd to is fines and actual enforcement. Where I work people smoke right in front of the door under a sign that syas “don’t smoke here”, then they leave their butts on the ground or in the garden. At tram stops every day I see people throwing butts on the ground whilst “authorised officers” look away.

Don’t get me wrong, I think it is great that this site exists but the reality is that without actual enforcement and a proper crackdown smokers will continue to pollute our streets, waterways and oceans with their filth.

  35. i study at the melbourne dental hospital, recently the ash trays from out the front have been removed and replaced about 50m away from where they once were, the front of the HOSPITAL is now covered in butts! why do somthing that creates more littering? an ash tray looks better than having butts all over the ground!

    - Kat, VIC
  36. This forum is a great source of further excuses that smokers are trotting out for not binning their butts. This great website already addresses most of them, but it’s funny how some people still don’t use this information to change their behaviour.

    - Bron, VIC
  37. Fantastic website on a salient issue. In Australia, with the threat of bushfires fines for littering with butts should be increased dramatically. In addition our wonderful environment is being polluted.

    - karen, VICTORIA
  38. Have moved from melbourne to queensland and we use to report people who threw there butts outs of cars. I am wondering if we can do the same in qld??

    - marie-anne, QLD
  39. Carrying a small ashtray is a good idea. I have done this for yrs. They were at the time handed out by my local council. Small enough to carry in pocket or handbag. No excuse.

    - Jan, VIC
  40. Wow… what an amazing concept… the good the bad and the ugly… how on earth did you come up with that one?… Great stuff!!

    - Deborah, VIC
  41. Cigarettes should be completely banned. Problem solved.

    - Tristan, NSW
  42. For gods sake leave smokers alone, half you commenter’s probably don’t even recycle or take public transport…Double standards, holier than thou preachers. Have a look in your own backyards there may not be cigarette butts but I’m sure the vista is equally unpleasant.

    - Paul, NSW
  43. Unfortunately smokers do not consider the environment and not litter.
Having seen smokers who can’t use the ashtray installed in their own cars who instead flick their ash and finished butt out the window, witnessing a smoker empty their full car ashtray on to the road, fixed smoking bins does not seem to work as the butts still are on the ground. I wish you all the best in your campaign only time will tell if smokers care about the environment.

    - Brett, VICTORIA
  44. The other day the car in front of me at the lights flicked a butt out the window. I thought “stuff this”, so I got out, picked up the butt and threw it back in her window and said “you dropped this”. At the next lights she got out, came over to me and thanked me for the strong reminder of what not to do! So there’s one way to deal with things! Probably lucky I didn’t get my head punched in though! I probably wouldn’t highly recommend this approach.

    - Joel, VIC
  45. If there weren’t so many anti-smoking nazis around we wouldn’t need to drop our butts. Leave us alone. I will smoke when and where I want to and I’m sick of other people trying to tell me not to.

The real point now that I’ve had my rant, is that people are so sucked in by the anti-smoking propaganda that they fail to realise that people will smoke regardless. There is not one smoker in the country that will say “Oh there’s no ashtray so I’d better not have a cigarette”. We’re all coping with being forced to smoke outside but it would be better if our cooperation was acknowledged and smoking areas and places to put butts were provided. If there is nowhere to put my butt what am I to do? Put it in my pocket – I don’t think so. So final message – campaign for appropriate places to put cigarette butts and maybe you’ll get some support.

    - Lynn
  46. Great idea, free ashtray. But there should be an option to get more, whether for friends, rellies or to leave on public ashtrays for those who need them to pick up.

    - Christopher, QLD
  47. Great website. The people who have created it have done a great job.

    - Mark, VIC
  48. Very informative. Posters should be displayed outside bars and clubs.

    - Dave, VIC
  49. Good luck.

    - John, VIC
  50. Nice.

    - Isaiyas, VIC
  51. Good look.

    - Jose, NSW
  52. This is great we smoke outside of work and it is horrible to see all the butts on the ground what a great idea to give personal ashtrays one small step toward helping a huge problem good on you.

    - Sandra, SA
  53. Thanks for this generous idea! I now have no excuses to flick my butt around.

    - Naomi, NSW
  54. It’s fantastic! What a great way to stop butts on grounds!

    - Sara, WA
  55. If there were more comfortable places for people who do smoke to sit and butt out with ashtrays available it would be a lot cleaner in areas instead of gardens used in and near smokers areas.

    - Melika, QLD
  56. Great site easy to navigate.

    - Katie, WA
  57. I work in a visitor centre in Blue Mountains National Park. Can we get bulk personal ashtrays to give out?

    - Greg, WA
  64. There are four smokers in this family. They all smoke in the back of the local hotel. Am encouraging them to put their butts in a container (rather they stopped smoking altogether) I feel that if each one had personal ashtray they would use it.

    - Les, TAS
  65. A great site with good ideas to help people think about not smoking.

    - Thomas, QLD
  66. Great idea can’t wait to try it

    - Al, NSW
  67. A personal ashtray is all that is needed. When I walk my dog it’s my responsibility to carry doggybags and keep full ones with me until I see a bin. If dog walkers can carry around poo, smokers can carry a couple of cigarette butts!

    - Corine, QLD
  68. I hate seeing cig butts they are horrible. BIN THEM don’t drop them yeeeeeeew.

    - Lylah, NSW
  69. Thanks I always do not like the cig butts on the street they are so bad.

    - Paul, VIC
  74. I think if it comes it will really help the person i have chosen to send it to…i picked my partner then he has no excuses for any butts lying around….

    - Adam, QLD
  75. I like the idea of having a convenient ashtray instead of having to search for a ash bin.

    - Melanie, SA
  76. This is a great idea :) I really hope more people hear about this.

    - Alycia, QLD
  77. Excellent idea. I’m a smoker but my one of my pet hates is butt littering. It’s a shocking thing.

    - Kaylene, NSW
  81. Stubs be abandoned in the ashtrays and do not clutter up the world.

    - Yana, NSW
  82. These vessels are fantastic & I am happy to see they are being promoted on the net. Hopefully more people use them. I hate seeing butts being thrown on the ground.

    - Michelle, QLD
  83. This is a brilliant idea.

    - Sandra, SA
  84. Good idea.

    - Christine, NSW
  85. I just think a lot of information on this site regarding butts should be advertised on television where a lot more people would see and become aware.

    - Jacqueline, VIC
  86. Butt bins next to trash cans.

    - Jodie, SA
  87. Just discovered the sites and think that it’s great! I would love to see personal ashtrays made available at big events.

    - Jade, QLD
  88. I’m not a smoker… but I think this personal ashtray will be very handy when I’m out and about with my boyfriend who does unfortunately smoke. so thank you.

    - Tegan, NSW

  95. This is a great site – like the info. Would like to get some of the posters to use is there a way to do that?

    - David, VIC
  96. I hate putting my smokes out the window in case of bush fires etc… this will be a great way to stop this bad habit.

    - Amy, WA
  97. Great idea…I support you fully…I’m going to make a small pack to carry with me containing a pair of gloves small tongs and the personal ashtray. Then I’ll be prepared to clear child friendly areas of butts…children are too young to ‘smoke’.

    - Diana, QLD
  98. I believe this is a really positive idea and that smokers can still smoke but reduce any damage to the environment. Cheers.

    - Julieta, NSW
  99. A worthwhile site to visit for any smoker. I smoke and detest seeing butts on the ground. If there is no bin mine end up in my handbag, not a great place to store them. My sister puts hers in her pocket. This is who I will be giving my free ashtray to.

    - Myra, WA
  100. This is a wonderful idea thank you for your web site.

  103. You need a video

  104. I can encourage butt litterers to “butt it then bin it”

    - EVA, NSW
  105. Great idea and I’m glad these are free. I dont smoke myself but am going to order one and keep them around for my douche mates who just throw their butts anywhere.

    - Stefan, VIC
  106. I gave mine that I ordered to a friend and would like another one for myself please. Thank You

    - Michael, QLD
  107. I’ve seen bins surrounded by a sea of butts-I kid you not. I believe people think they will set the bin on fire if they put it in there. If all bins had an ashtray they would be mostly used. However some people are just stupid and won’t.

    - Stephanie, SA
  108. Great stuff will support your efforts

    - Lilian, TAS
  109. I think this is a brilliant idea. Even though i am a smoker (minus the three pregnancies) i have always placed my butts in the bin. I dreaded going to the Beach and feeling the butts between my toes. YUK.

    - Christina, ACT
  110. As a non smoker I am getting ashtray for my partner. What a great idea & I hope your campaign has a major impact on such a drastic problem. Keep up the great work.
